چکیده

Wehave analysed all availableX-ray data on the lowmass X-ray binary Cygnus X-2 obtained with the Ginga satellite. A detailed analysis of the spectral and fast timing behaviour of these 4 years of data provides new insights in the behaviour of this Z source. We confirm the previously observed recurrent patterns of behaviour in the X-ray colour-colour and hardnessintensity diagrams consisting of shifts and shape changes in the Z track. However, we find a continuous range of patterns rather than a discrete set. The source behaviour in the diagrams is correlated with overall intensity, which varied by a factor of 1.34 in the Ginga data. We find that when the overall intensity increases, the mean velocity and acceleration of the motion along the normal branch of the Z track increase, as well as the width of the normal branch in the hardness-intensity diagram. Contrary to previous results we find that, during different observations, when the source is at the same position in the normal branch of the Z track the rapid X-ray variability differs significantly. During the Kuulkers et al. (1996a) “medium” level, a normal branch quasi-periodic oscillation is detected, which is not seen during the “high” overall intensity level. Also, during the high overall intensity level episodes the very-low frequency noise on the lower normal branch is very strong and steep, whereas during the medium overall intensity level episodes this noise component at the same position in the Z track is weak and less steep. The explanation of the different overall intensity levels with a precessing accretion disk is difficult to reconcile with our data. Furthermore, we found that the frequency of the horizontal branch quasi-periodic oscillation decreases when Cygnus X-2 enters the upper normal branch, giving a model dependent upper limit on the magnetic field strength at the magnetic equator of ∼ 8.5 × 109 G. We also report five bursts, with durations between two and eight seconds, whose occurrence seems to be uncorrelated with location in the Z track, overall intensity level or orbital phase. The burst properties indicate that they are not regular type I bursts. Send offprint requests to: R.A.D. Wijnands ([email protected])

The first simultaneous X-ray/γ-ray observations of Cyg X-1 by Ginga and OSSE

We present the results of 4 simultaneous observations of Cygnus X-1 by Ginga and OSSE. The X-ray/γray spectra can be described by an intrinsic continuum and a component due to Compton reflection including an iron Kα line. The intrinsic spectrum at X-ray energies is a power-law with a photon spectral index of Γ = 1.6. The intrinsic γ-ray spectrum can be phenomenologically described by either a p...

A Fit To The Simultaneous Broad Band Spectrum Of Cygnus X-1 Using The Transition Disk Model

We have used the transition disk model to fit the simultaneous broad band (2− 500 keV) spectrum of Cygnus X-1 from OSSE and Ginga observations. In this model, the spectrum is produced by saturated Comptonization within the inner region of the accretion disk, where the temperature varies rapidly with radius. In an earlier attempt, we demonstrated the viability of this model by fitting the data f...

Normal-Branch Quasi-Periodic Oscillations during the High Intensity State of Cygnus X-2

Using data obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we report the detection of a 5 Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the bright low-mass X-ray binary and Z source Cygnus X-2 during high overall intensities (the high intensity state). This QPO was detected on the so-called normal branch and can be identified with the normal branch QPO or NBO. Our detection of the NBO is the first one ...

A Complete Relativistic Ionized Accretion Disc in Cygnus X – 1 3

The galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X–1 is observed to be in one of two X-ray spectral states; either the low/hard (low soft X-ray flux and a flat power law tail) or high/soft (high blackbody-like soft X-ray flux and a steep power law tail) state. The physical origin of these two states is unclear. We present here a model of an ionized accretion disc, the spectrum of which is blurred by re...
